International Talk Like A 1)Pirate Day

Ahoy matey!
喂!老大!

1.
Do you like pirates? We don't mean the kind that copies movies and games. We mean the kind that once sailed the seven seas with a 2)parrot and an eye-3)patch. Blackbeard and Captain Kidd were two such real-life pirates and September 19 is their day.

1) pirate (n.) 海盜
Many movies have been made about pirates.
2) parrot (n.)
I like parrots because they can talk.
3) patch (n.)
Ever since the accident he has worn a patch over his left eye.

2.
September 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. This special day was created in 1995 by Americans Mark Summers and John Baur. Their idea didn't really 4)set sail, however, until humor 5)columnist Dave Barry wrote about it in 2002. Barry 6)describes how the idea started:

4) set sail
The ship will set sail at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
5) columnist (n.)
My brother works as a columnist for a newspaper.
6) describe (v.)
Tom described the city as fun, busy and exciting.

3.
"They (Summers and Baur) were playing racquetball, and, as so often happens, they began talking like pirates. And then it suck them: Why not have a day when EVERYBODY talks like a pirate? They decided that the 7)logical day would be Sept. 19, because that--as you are no doubt aware--is Summers' 8)ex-wife's birthday." Okay, so it's a silly beginning to a silly idea. Nevertheless, the idea stuck and now International Talk like A Pirate Day has joined the list of lesser-known holidays like 9)Hug Your Cat Day and National Chocolate Ice Cream Day.

7) logical (a.)
I always y and make a logical decision.
8) ex-wife (n.) 前妻
Mike's ex-wife hates him very much.
9) hug (v.)
Tanya hugs her son every day.

4.
So why would anyone want to talk like a pirate? On their 10)website (www.talklikeapirate.com) Cap'n Slappy and Ol' Chum Bucket (Summers and Baur) give a few reasons. The first is, "Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple." But wait, there's more. Talking like a pirate adds color to your conversations. Pirates are brave and 11)tough, 12)no-nonsense 13)braggarts. By copying their language, we can be, too ... at least for a day. (Some 14)resictions 15)apply.)

10) website (n.) 網站
What kinds of websites do you like to visit?
11) tough (a.)
Rick is a tough guy who can beat(打敗) anyone in a fight.
12) no-nonsense (a.)
My boss is a no-nonsense kind of person.
13) braggart (n.)
I hate talking to braggarts!
14) resiction (n.) 限制
There are many resictions if you are a foreigner living in another couny.
15) apply (v.) 適用
I'm sorry, but this special price only applies to people older than 60.

5.
Here are the basics of pirate vocabulary:
Ahoy! is pirate for "Hello." It's often joined with matey.
Ahoy matey! is the classic pirate greeting. Note: a matey is never a landlubber. See note below.
Aye! is one of their favorites. It means simply, "Yes" or "I agree." They like to say it twice.
Aye aye, Captain! is what you'd say if you ever spoke to the Captain.
Landlubbers are people who don't sail and fear pirates. Also used in pirate-to-pirate 16)insults.

Ahoy! 經常和 matey(老兄)共用。
Aye!
Landlubbers(陸地仔)是指不懂航海又害怕海盜的人。

16) insult (n.)
She made an insult about how I looked.

6.
As you can see, the basics are simple. And many people have high hopes for this holiday. As Dave Barry explains, "I uly think this idea could bring us, as a nation, closer together. But not TOO much closer. Some of us will have swords." Aye aye! Mr. Barry, spoken like a ue landlubber.
